The Gourleys
Married for 36 years, high school sweethearts Anne and Al Gourley are all about the community, and they’re exemplifying the giving spirit by welcoming daughter Amy and son-in-law Matt under their roof as the family tackles Our First Home. Amy and Matt are high school sweethearts themselves, identical ages, just like Amy’s parents, and while the guys love their building, the girls love creating. While Amy’s parents are looking for the opportunity to lend a helping hand and have an adventure, Amy and Matt both appreciate that without Anne and Al’s support and experience, the young couple would struggle to realise their property dreams.
Anne
Anne’s a hospice nurse looking to help her daughter and son-in-law own their first home. Having overcome a double mastectomy in June 2014, Anne’s outlook on life has changed considerably. She’s willing to think outside the square, take risks and have an adventure along the way.
Al
Al’s a “sort of retired builder” in his own words, with plenty of renovation experience. He’s had to deal with his fair share of problems while lending a helping hand, contracting blood-poisoning while volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in Christchurch post-quake!
Amy
Studying Human Nutrition and Psychology, Amy says she and husband Matt daydream about renovating all the time. She appreciates the sacrifices her parents have made, and plans to use her organisational skills to help her and Matt nail down their first home.
Matt
Apprentice builder Matt thinks it would’ve taken wife Amy and him at the least five years to get on the property ladder, if it wasn’t for the help from Amy’s parents. He’s bringing a relaxed, optimistic attitude to the renovation project, and maybe a few jokes too!
