Not everyone has a knack for styling or interior decorating and it can be tricky business creating a look and feel to impress buyers. Kirsty Johnson, national decorating manager at Freedom and our very own property expert Matt O'Brien have some advice...
Go with the flow: Kirsty says it's important every room connects to those around it in some way and has a flow. Choose a style you love and use it thorughout the whole space - even painting your home the one colour creates flow. Having a single theme doesn't mean you need to be rigid,
"Be a little eclectic and adventurous with your styling, after all there are no rules. Use a personal object that has meaning to you and mix that in with the trends" she says.
Don't mess with the flow: Matt says furniture choice and placement is paramount, afterall you don't want buyers tripping over a bookcase no matter how stylish it is,
"Make sure your rooms aren't too full of stuff, have a big clear out, the more space there is the bigger the rooms will look" he says.
Kirsty says a lot of people make the mistake of blocking access to outdoor spaces with furniture so keeping that indoor/outdoor flow is really important.
Small spaces: Using materials such as glass, metal and mirrors all help small spaces feel bigger says Kirsty. Choose furniture that's not going to overpower the room, put drawers inside your wardrobe and maybe only have one bedside table in the guest bedroom,
"White also opens up any room and always makes it look bigger than it is" she says.
Colour your world: Kirsty says tying colour into your space doesn't have to be complicated. Try taking colours from your rug and pulling little accents out to use in vases, cushions and accessories to create a flow that way.
Depending on the house, Matt believs a bit of colour is always good, it brightens everything up and gives it life and energy.
Winter warmers: As cooler weather approaches adding plush cushions, throws and rugs (especially to wooden or tiled floors) and updating your drapery can add warmth and value to the place.
Storage solutions: Many new homes have well thought out storage but older homes often don't. Kirsty says everyone wants storage but they don't necessarily want to see it. Be minimilistic, tie in matching pieces or have a flow of similar materials to help blend the storage in,
"Having items that don't look like they are there to store things is the key" she says.
Making a big trendy impact: Kirsty believes that buyers want to see fresh, new and exciting and Matt agrees,
"I don't think you can have too much WOW-factor, everyone loves a bit of WOW and it's all about getting your place looking as special as possible. Obviously people have to imagine themselves in the space, but even if your stuff is way cooler than theirs it's only going to make it look asspirational" he says.
