For those inspired by some of the fun from episode twelve's challenge, here are some tips from Yolanda on how to body paint the best!

Note: Be sure to use specialist body paint, which can be purchased from specialist body art and make-up studios. We do not advise using paints fit for other purposes or without a water base as it can be harmful.

  • Try to keep the overall vision in mind. Map out area where you need to – having a plan from the beginning will help to inform and guide your piece. In the OFH episode, white body pencils were used to map out the original design.
  • If working to a backdrop, always ensure that you are taking a few steps back to get the overall impression of your work. This will also allow you to get some perspective, and see how other people might view it.
  • When you begin painting, always try to advance from light to dark where possible. It is much easier to pick a design with a light background and ease your way in to it. This will also stop dark colours from bleeding into your light colours.
  • Make sure that you are using a considerable amount of paint, and thinning this out with water where possible. This can always be layered and touched up where necessary.
  • Consider adopting a cutting in technique when painting hard or sharp lines. This is a commonly used painting term that refers to the action of using a sharp edged brush to paint along an edge. Ensure that the brush is well lubricated and flows smoothly across the surface – try not to be too heavy handed. Make sure that the brush you are using has a square tip.
  • Let surfaces dry before you apply additional layers, and always clean your brush when moving between colour palettes.

Enjoy!
